They are fed directly off the cold water mains supply and as a result they have a much higher flow rate than a traditional vented cylinder. An unvented cylinder is heated by either immersion heaters or by a heat source linked to the cylinder, for example, boiler, Air or Ground Source Heat Pump, or solar. They are sealed systems so they require an expansion vessel either next to or incorporated within the cylinder. An expansion vessel allows for the expansion of water in the system as it heats up and accommodates the increase in pressure by up to 4.5 bar.
Unvented hot water cylinders are a great space-saving option for the modern home. They don’t require a cold water storage tank in the loft which frees up valuable space in your property. They also don’t rely on gravity to function so can be installed almost anywhere in your home more suitable for you.
Other advantages include reduced noise in the system. This is due to the fact that there is no cold water filling up the water storage cistern. The system is completely sealed too, so the water is not at risk of contamination and will not freeze in winter.
