Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) are a low carbon heating alternative. They work much in the same way as a fridge keeps cool, but in reverse. They draw in warmth from the outside air through a compressor and use it to heat a refrigerant liquid which turns to gas as it heats up. Heat Pumps can extract energy from the air even when the temperature is as low as -25’c. The heat generated is then distributed throughout the house to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, heat pump convectors and hot water in your home.
They run on electricity not gas which is a lower carbon way of heating your home. Insulation is the key to getting the most out of your system and you will reap the rewards as a result. In order to get the best efficiency from your heat pump your home will also need double glazed windows.
